HEAVENLY TORAH HESCHEL PDF

I had to purchase the rest of the volumes on my own, since this book—although rich with erudite discussions on Aggadic literature—was not to be found in the yeshiva's library. There is more than one way to think and behave as a devoted Jew. There is more than one way for a traditional Jew to relate to the Sabbath or perceive God's providence, and this was the case even in the time of the Sages. Heschel's exposition of two conflicting schools of thought in rabbinic Judaism, Rabbi Akiva's and Rabbi Yishmael's, was not always convincing.

This is a translation of what is arguably Heschel's most important, ambitious, and monumental work. Best known for his role in the Civil Rights and peace movements of the s and for his Abraham Joshua Heschel. Known most widely for his role in the civil rights and peace movements of the s, Abraham Joshua Heschel made major scholarly contributions to the fields of biblical studies, rabbinics, medieval Jewish philosophy, Hasidism, and mysticism. Yet his most ambitious scholarly achievement, his three-volume study of Rabbinic Judaism, is only now appearing in English.

Heschel's great insight is that the world of rabbinic thought can be divided into two types or schools, those of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ishmael, and that the historic disputes between the two are based on fundamental differences over the nature of revelation and religion. Furthermore, this disagreement constitutes a basic and necessary ongoing polarity within Judaism between immanence and transcendence, mysticism and rationalism, neo-Platonism and Aristotelianism.

Heschel then goes on to show how these two fundamental theologies of revelation may be used to interpret a great number of topics central to Judaism. Two Approaches to Torah Exegesis. The Exoteric and Esoteric Personalities. The Tabernacle and the Sacrifices. Why Sacrifices? Worship in the Temple. The Shekhinah in the West or Everywhere? Torah from Heaven. The Book of Deuteronomy.

Is the Propheta Partner or a Vessel? The Cherubim. The Exile of the Shekhinah. Does God Really Need Support? Make Atonement for Me. The Torah Speaks of Worldly Ways. The Pleasures of This World. In Awe and Trembling. They BelieveOr Not? Issues of Supreme Importance. The Language of Torah. Transcendental and Terrestrial Perspectives. Go round the Orchard. Beholding the Face of God. The Torah That Is in Heaven. Moses Ascent to Heaven. The Descent of the Divine Glory.

Moses Prophecy. How the Torah Was Written. The Maximalist and Minimalist Approaches. The Maximalist Approach to the Principle Torah. Changes in the Text of Scripture. Variants in Ptolemys Torah. The Kings Scroll and the Words on the Stones. The Last Twelve Verses. The Torah Given Scroll by Scroll. The Beggars Wisdom. It Is Not in the Heavens. Renewal of Torah. Against Multiplying Rules. Stringencies and Leniencies. Former and Latter Authorities. Theology in the Legal Literature.
