The book opens with a boy called Jarred, a friend of Prince Endon.

After the death of King Alton and his queen, Endon is proclaimed King in his father's place. To consummate this, a magical steel belt, the Belt of Deltora, is set around Endon's waist. The Belt recognizes Endon as Deltora's rightful king. Jarred goes to the library and learns that the evil Shadow Lord, a Sauron-like intelligence located in the Shadowlands, once tried to seize the land in which is the kingdom of Deltora.

Because the people of those days were divided into seven tribes, the Shadow Army soon overwhelmed much of the land. Jarred learned that a blacksmith named Adin gathered the sacred talismans from each tribe and attached them to a chain of steel medallions.

The people's trust in Adin, channeled through the gems, was powerful enough to drive back the Shadow Army into its own dark home, the Shadowlands. Adin later became king of the united land called Deltora; yet he never forgot that the Enemy was not destroyed.

He therefore never let the Belt out of his sight. With every generation, the Belt was worn less and less, diminishing its effect. The kings and queens also let their power go to the administrative council, diminishing its power. View 1 comment. Sep 13, Jason Sharp rated it it was amazing Shelves: is This was one of my favorite book series as a teen and was the book that really got me into reading fantasy. It's technically considered a children's fiction book, but if you are interested in YA books don't let that scare you off as it's an excellent piece of fantasy writing.

I recently read this book for the third of fourth time after a very long hiatus of reading hundreds of other YA and Adult fiction and I'm pleased to say that it holds up very well. The series starts with a king and his best This was one of my favorite book series as a teen and was the book that really got me into reading fantasy.

The series starts with a king and his best friend living a sheltered life. An evil possibly demonic? The only protection that can keep away this evil king is a belt forged with 7 magical gems but when nefarious deeds cause the belt lose it's power it is destroyed and the gems are spread across the land each protected by an evil monstrous guardian.

The Shadow Lord invades the country and a generation passes before the son of the king's best friend can take up the quest to find these lost gems.

Each book details the travels of this teen and his battle against one of the guardians for a new gem. The first book is very interesting, but somewhat light on action as much of the story is being set-up. The books themselves are short, easy reads though and the amount of set-up is similar to what a much larger book would typically entail. If you have any interest in high fantasy writing full of magic, monsters and battles please give this a shot. It's available at many bookstores and libraries as a package where the first 4 volumes out of 8 are collected together.

The series has done so well that it has evolved from a standalone 8 book series to something much larger. Deltora Quest 8 books Deltora Shadowlands 3 books Dragons of Deltora 4 books There is also an anime based on the original series, a Japanese video game and a couple side books that flesh out the lore a bit Book of Monsters, Art books, ect.

It's an extremely popular series in Australia that's never quite taken off in America so if you can give it a chance. You will not regret it. View all 3 comments.

I reread this book for my rereading childhood favourites video! It was the series that first got me into reading when I was 10 years old, and it still holds up as an adult. What an adventure! Nov 05, George Jankovic rated it really liked it. What a nice, quick read. This is a great fantasy novel for year olds. First half of the book is about the protagonist's dad. The second half is very the action starts and the three main characters meet. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Mar 07, Beth McCraw rated it liked it. I liked the adventure! I mean, it was a pretty solid beginning of a middle grade—no even younger—fantasy series. I remember finding Deltora really scary, and I was absolutely obsessed with the world. Anyone remember those? That was always the best week of elementary school. Anyway, I mean, it was a pretty solid beginning of a middle grade—no even younger—fantasy series.

Anyway, half the book was a prequel to set up the actual series, following the parents of the main character as they escaped the palace right before the fall of the empire and the Shadow Lord took over.

Clearly this was juvenile but I still found it really entertaining. My only gripe is that apparently Emily Rodda hates using contractions?? There was literally not a single contraction in the entire book. It got old pretty fast but hey to each their own.
