In this technical note, we present a new surgical approach for genioplasty in which a minimally invasive procedure is used to perform the chin osteotomy. The main goal was to reduce postoperative functional recovery time and possible complications, especially reduction of lip incompetence, chin ptosis, and muscle dysfunction, by retaining the intactness of the mentalis muscles. The chin has an important role in facial harmony. Chin corrections are mainly performed for esthetic reasons.

Genioplasty can be effective for patients with a small or receding chin. A chin that seems too small in proportion to other facial features can make the nose appear overly long.

Plastic surgeons frequently use chin implants to balance the features of a younger patient or may use genioplasty in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure in a more mature patient. Reshaping the chin can be accomplished either by using chin implants or by repositioning the bone supporting the chin. Many types of implants are available, manufactured from a variety of materials, including silicone or other substances.

There is no available evidence to suspect that silicone implants cause any disease. Your surgeon will consult with you and discuss recommendations for the type of implant to use.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision inside the lower lip or under the chin. The surgeon then repositions the chin bone or places an implant through this incision. Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)

Genioplasty, also known, as a chin augmentation is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of the chin and jaw. Most patients choose to undergo genioplasty surgery because they are self-conscious or feel unhappy with the appearance of their chin and side profile. Genioplasty is often performed at the same time as corrective jaw surgery in order to correct the alignment of a patients bite, and improve appearance and facial symmetry. There are two main types of genioplasty surgery that can be performed depending on what the patient would like to achieve. These are sliding genioplasty and chin implant surgery. As with both forms of genioplasty, an incision is made inside the mouth as to not allow visible scarring on the face.
