It is unclear what relationship, if any, the old man and his murderer share. The narrator denies having any feelings of hatred or resentment for the man.
He states: 'I loved the old man! He had never wronged me! He had never given me insult! He also denies the assumption that he killed for greed: 'Object there was none. The ambiguity and lack of details about the two main characters stand in stark contrast to the specific plot details leading up to the murder. Get A Copy. The story does not tell as to why does he want to kill the old man who has striking blue 'vulture eyes'. It is the whole planning and strategising stage where he maps his steps for that one night where he would take charge and murder the old man.
He did not stalk, as he was already in the same house as his caretaker, therefore, he kept an account of the old man's night routine and sleeping pattern. The story is definitely creepy and a little disturbing, but it is so well written by Edgar Allan Poe, especially with the use of unconventional language use of expressions - ha!
Unlike other stories, it was easy to visualise the thought process, uneasiness and the anxiety the narrator had. Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Community Reviews. Edgar Allan Poe. The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles.
This is the Poe of legend. The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, Edgar was the second of three children.
Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Books by Edgar Allan Poe. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. I say I knew it well. I knew what the old man felt, and pitied him, although I chuckled at heart.
