Asian cultural tradition and a strong female character collide in this fantasy that explores society and belief systems. Although written at a fifth grade level, the themes may be too mature for some middle grade students. There are mild sexual themes including the exploration of gender differences and sexism and some violence. This book was a treat to read. I took my time so I could savor each chapter.

I love how Alison Goodman took historical practices in Asian culture and acclimated it into her fantasy world. Those rituals were obviously well researched. The main character is not a traditional superhero. Eona is crippled, not only physically, but also mentally due to the unreachable standards that society has set — to obtain true masculinity. The only thing I do not care for is the book's length pages.

The plot is very drawn-out and could easily be reduced to pages. This book would be a great gift to anybody interested in high fantasy and genuine female characters. There is a lot to explore. At the character level, Eona opens the door to talk about self worth, self value, limitations, et al. Summary: Twelve-year-old Eon is in the running to become the next Dragoneye, the intercessor between man and the energy dragons.

Eona: The Last Dragoneye

It follows the story of Eon, who has potential to become a Dragoneye, being able to control wind, water and land. However, Eon is actually a female concealed as a boy, and with females forbidden, she becomes a dangerous gamble. Eon has been studying the ancient art of Dragon Magic for four years, hoping he'll be selected as apprentice to a Dragoneye. Dragoneyes are the human links to the twelve dragons of good fortune, who provide energy to the earth. However, circumstance does not favour Eon; he is a cripple and despised by the trainers and other candidates for the ceremony. They believe his disability embodies bad luck and try to distance themselves, all except a boy named Dillon who is also bullied for his small size. Eon's master, Heuris Brannon, places all his hope and dwindling wealth into his pupil, who is able to see all twelve dragons in minds' sight.
