Crowds and Power is a revolutionary work in which Elias Canetti finds a new way of looking at human history and psychology. Breathtaking in its range and erudition, it explores Shiite festivals and the English Civil war, the finger exercises of monkeys and the effects of inflation in Weimar Germany. In this study of the interplay of crowds, Canetti offers one of the most profound and startling portraits of the human condition.

Our instincts for safety in crowds, following a Big Man, jumping into heaps honest and living in packs are similar to what we see for other mammals, especially primates, on Animal Planet.
It's an excellent lens for life in I'll keep this short since there are already many good reviews here. This book is a moving treatise on the dangers of powerful leaders who are very influential to the masses. It's an analysis of the link between our leaders, how we are led, and how this has shaped the society that we live in.
It's analysis covers the gambit from wild primates to suburbanites. The observations were very insightful and do seem to ring true prima facie. I honestly think that our electorate would be far less prone to influence by charismatic politicians if every citizen read this. Highly recommended. As always with Canetti, he's perceptive, writes clear as a bell and is generally correct. Trustworthy condition as represented! Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Crowds and Power Summary and Review
Crowds and Power German : Masse und Macht is a book by Elias Canetti , dealing with the dynamics of crowds and "packs" and the question of how and why crowds obey power of rulers. Canetti draws a parallel between ruling and paranoia. It is notable for its unusual tone; although wide-ranging in its erudition, it is not scholarly or academic in a conventional way. Rather, it reads like a manual written by someone outside the human race explaining to another outsider in concise and highly metaphoric language how people form mobs and manipulate power. Unlike much non-fiction writing, it is highly poetic and seething with anger. On asking questions: "On the questioner the effect is a feeling of enhanced power.
