For "Chuk and Gek" and "Daring Circus Youth," the double-feature bill that arrived there Saturday, is a charming package designed to please the young in heart. And, even a most meticulous searcher is not likely to find a politically tarnished bauble in it.

In "Chuk and Gek," for example, the producers have come up with a pair of genuinely lovable youngsters; little boys whose animal spirits, wide-eyed excitement and curiosity are not limited to the Soviets.

The fifty-minute story, treating of the adventures of the tads and their mother on a visit to the father of the family, a Moscow geologist stationed in far-off Siberia, is a simple, warm tale with universal appeal.

Since they all meet finally to celebrate the New Year amid those frozen surroundings, it is a thoroughly seasonal yarn, and the snowy, mountainous and forested countryside couldn't be more appropriate.

Lukinsky a fortunate man in having found Yura Chuchunov and Andrei Chilikin to play—and that apparently is just the word for it—Chuk and Gek, respectively. They are children who obviously take to direction with a minimum of inhibitions. Their fascination with the passing scene from the train that is taking them on their long journey; with the rabbits, squirrels, owls and reindeer they see for the first time and with the people they meet is both cheerful and natural.

Vasilyeva as their mother, D. Pavlov as the father and N. Komissarov as their gruff but kindly bearded Siberian host behave as grown-ups who appreciate the foibles of kids. Despite its exotic title, its Russian dialogue, its meager English subtitles and its strange setting, "Chuk and Gek" is easily recognizable as an amiable and tenderly told tale.

Although its story-line is practically non existent, "Daring Circus Youth" undoubtedly should convince a viewer that the Russians do not exist by bread alone. The circus talent passing in review here, culled from performers throughout the Soviets and presented at the Moscow Circus, is not only youthful but as standard as those from outside the Iron Curtain.

Filmed in pleasing color, he numerous jugglers, acrobats, cyclists, bareback riders, animal acts and gymnasts present a series of spectacles that could grace any ring.

The proceedings do tend to be repetitive and the "hurry, hurry, hurry" call of the barker should be heeded only by the true aficionado of the "big top. Yura ChuchunovGek. Andrel ChilikinMother.
