From New York, flight time is about 20 hours, excluding transit time. These flights typically shave two to four hours off flying time. Many of these budget airlines are expanding their networks to places further afield, like Perth, Melbourne, Macau, Taipei and Bangalore. Travelling by train through Malaysia and across the Causeway at Woodlands in the north of Singapore is a leisurely way to arrive.

However, there is no cause for alarm, as these are not areas usually frequented by tourists.
Yellow fever vaccinations are unnecessary unless arriving from infected areas. Singapore has the best healthcare facilities in the region. Medical services in both government and private institutions are excellent. Government and private hospitals are found all over the island. They compare favourably with those in the West. The hospitals here are advanced and well equipped to cope with the most complicated and difficult procedures. Most of their services are available to non-citizens but at substantially higher rates.
For this reason, ensure that you have bought adequate travel insurance. There is no shortage of private clinics in Singapore. All doctors speak English and at least one other language. They are professionally trained either here or abroad. Ask your embassy or hotel reception to recommend a private practitioner or specialist. In Singapore, most clinics can dispense medication, but there are also numerous registered pharmacies with a qualified pharmacist on duty.
Most pharmacies also stock personal care items, baby products, toiletries, cosmetics, vitamins, nutritional supplements and even unrelated sundries like gift cards and sweets. Singapore is a safe country with a very low crime rate.
There is occasional youth gang activity but it seldom — if at all — involves visitors. It is divided into cents. Other coins are in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents. Hotels and department stores offer the least attractive rates. They are also open for business seven days a week, usually from 9—10am until about 9pm. Major credit cards are accepted at airline offices, hotels and most restaurants and upmarket stores. Some small travel agencies, camera and electronic goods stores tend to add a surcharge of between 2 and 4 percent.
Be sure to ask before making payment. Hotels, larger restaurants, and many clubs and bars usually levy a 10 percent service charge, which is added to your bill along with the standard 7 percent GST. There is no need to tip unless the staff have gone out of their way to provide exceptional service. Beyond that, tipping is the exception rather than the rule.
In small local restaurants, food stalls and taxis, there is no service charge and no tipping — a smile with a simple thank you is more than sufficient. In addition to GST, most hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs add a service charge of 10 percent. Note: refunds are only given for visitors who depart Singapore by air.
