In order to ensure the comparability of statistical data, uniform classifications are used in the production of statistics. A rapid development of science and technology and structural changes of the economy condition a need for a periodic update of classifications. For state-specific purposes, the Member States use national classifications which are based on the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community.
The classification has been thoroughly changed — the part of service activities has undergone the most substantial change and provides now a more detailed structure of the higher levels of classification.
The new classification shall be introduced into the production of statistics stage by stage in accordance with the time schedule specified in the Regulation. In the next stage, the classification shall be taken into use in statistical surveys, to which the transition period — applies. First, short-term statistics the monthly and quarterly statistics shall be published according to the new classification.
Next, annual statistics regarding the year shall follow. Finally, national accounts shall switch over to the new classification. For ensuring comparability, recalculated time series are planned to be published in parallel with the statistics of new periods. Preparations for recalculating time series were started in The basic recalculation method was recoding of the activities of economic units in initial databases.
In case of earlier periods, recalculation of aggregated data with the help of transitional matrices was also used. The purpose is to publish recalculated time series simultaneously with the data of a new period.
The tables shall be supplemented with information about the relevant classification used for classifying economic activities. The customers are advised to use the statistics published in conformity with EMTAK , as in case of the majority of economic activities, statistics will be published in conformity with EMTAK only until the end of More detailed information on the recalculation and publication of time series is to be published at the beginning of under an appropriate heading of the database and in the release calendar.
