I did initially think that for it to have been published you'd need to wait for the invention of the printing press, but according to that's not the case, and the Romans had a publishing industry based on slave labour and hand copying. Aan de eerste drie keizers besteedt Suetonius zeer veel aandacht, maar de lateren komen er wat bekaaid van af. Dat velen maar kort geregeerd hebben de elkaar opeenvolgende Galba, Otho en Vitellius ieder nog geen jaar , helpt ook niet mee.

Suetonius kan van iedere keizer goede en slechte eigenschappen opnoemen, maar alleen Caesar, Augustus en veel later Vespasianus en Titus komen naar voren als grote mannen.

Met de derde keizer, Tiberius, beginnen de wreedheden, die met Caligula tot een dieptepunt komen en pas bij Vespasianus ophouden. Hieruit blijkt duidelijk dat het einde van de republiek niet bepaald per se een zegen was voor de Romeinse bevolking. Noch voor de keizers zelf trouwens, want alleen Augustus, Vespasianus en Titus sterven een natuurlijke dood. Het Romeinse rijk komt onderwijl als een erg herkenbaar rijk over, met rechtshoven, bibliotheken, koeriers, sportclubs in vier kleuren , markten, belastingontvangers, echtscheidingen enz.

Alleen de buitengewoon grote en bijgelovige aandacht voor voortekens maakt Suetonius' relaas typisch van een andere tijd. Maar hij is erg op dreef in zijn karakterschetsen, anekdotes, waar hij regelrechte roddels en zwartmakerijen niet schuwt, zelfs als hij ze zelf in twijfel trekt.

Zo wordt het wel leuk om over de decadente uitspattingen van bijv. Caligula en Nero te lezen. Ook zijn zijn teksten niet gespeend van humor. Zo schrijft hij na zeven bladzijden goede daden van Caligula: "Tot zover over keizer Caligula, de rest zal over het monster Caligula moeten gaan". Readers also enjoyed. About Suetonius.
