Luperce Miranda was a bandolim player and composer who has composed many great choros. I have bought the CD by AQuattro as well as a book with choros by Luperce Miranda and I liked to play some of those choros on my mandolin.
Some days ago I have dicovered a set of three videos with a concert played by AQuattro with many of the pieces on this CD and some other great choros. O conjunto surgiu de um convite recebido por Dudu Maia bandolim de 10 cordas para gravar um CD com obras de Luperce Miranda. Desvairada is also very popular among guitar players. In my playlist I have collected some 20 versions of Desvairada for mandolin, guitar and other instruments.
I have not found a sheet music version of Desvairada. For myself I have created a sheet music version from a midi file. On my homepage some time ago I have started a project to present all the 97 choros from the songbook choro with youtube videos and more interesting information. Now again I have started to work on this project, and I have changed my system — I will present 5 or 6 choros on one page with one video for each choro added by links to other videos and more information.
This choro by Jacob do Bandolim is obviously not composed for the bandolim — the melody goes down in some cases below the G, the lowest note on a bandolim. Gallani no cavaco. Luperce Miranda is one of the most important composer of choros for the bandolim, the brazilian mandolin. Miranda was born in and died in , he has composed more than choros.
Many of Mirandas compositions are played until today. Dudu Maia — bandolim 10 cordas Fernando Cesar — violao 7 cordas Pedro vasconcellos — cavaco Valerinho — pandeiro.
Compositions by Luperce Miranda have been published some time ago in a book titled Brasil na Pauta da Fonseca publishing company — it might be difficult to find this, but I can really recommend this book! The transcriptions in this edition are very clear, the typical rhytmical variations played in choro music have not been included in the transcriptions.
Instead the basic rhythm of the music has been transcribed. This makes it quite easy to read and play those pieces, and so I think that this book is very good suited for beginners who want to start to play choro music. Later it is still possible to add the rhythmical variations — those can be learned from listening to good recordings of choro music.
The book does also contain useful biographical information about Luperce Mirand — unfortunately only in Portuguese. However one important information can be found, that should be known. Miranda frequently used an instrument for his recordings that was tuned in A instead in G. The transcriptions in this book however were based on the sound of the music. To play the pieces in the way they were played by Miranda it is necessary to play some of the pieces one note lower than transcribed.
For some pieces this does not make a big difference, but for other pieces it is absolutely necessary to be able to play the pieces in the required tempo. One of the best pieces composed by Luperce Mirando is Quando me Lembro.
This piece is frequently played on the bandolim, but also on the guitar or even on the accordion. For mandolin players this is a really interesting piece with typical elements of the classical mandolin technique — especially a beautiful part in duo style. The following video shows a version played by Marco de Pinna, other versions can be found in my playlist at the end. Another favorite tune of mine is Nea Sorrindo. This was recorded by the 12 year old bandolim player Tiago Tunes:.
